Hybrid Terrain Golf Cart Tires Guide: What Are They?

The smoothest most capable tires explained.

Hybrid Terrain vs. All Terrain vs. Street Golf Cart Tires

Over the years, golf cart tires have gone from simple, round 18-inch donuts used for 18-holes of golf, to full blown vehicle-grade radial tires that are expected to last thousands of miles of street, grass and trail abuse. But when we started selling tires 12 years ago, “radial” (steel belted automotive style tires) for golf carts did not even exist yet. So, it’s safe to say, A LOT has changed in the golf cart tire game this past decade. And that’s because of two major trends in the golf cart space over those years:

  1. Golf cart owners started using their golf carts way more off the course.
  2. People began wanting their golf carts to come lifted from the factory with bigger and cooler wheels and tires on them - which many EZGO, Club Car, Denago, Evolution, ICON and other carts do now today.

But early factory lifted golf carts (and many still today) came on traditional balloon-shaped All Terrain tires that, while very capable offroad, didn’t always provide a smooth ride on-road. We have heard about the dreaded “whomp-whomp-whomp” and “wobbly ride” feel from way too many customers over the years (multiple per week). So many customers began replacing their All Terrain tires with taller (20” – 23”) street tires. But there was still a huge portion of customers wanting an All Terrain that could actually ride smooth.

And then came the solution: Hybrid All Terrain Tires.

Hybrid Terrain golf cart tires were introduced into the market in 2023, with the X-Comp Gladiator Golf Cart tires leading the way, and many other brands joining the battle soon after. This amazingly functional tread-style combines All-Terrain capabilities (and looks) with a tread depth low enough to still drive on the golf course (7mm or less) while also being smooth and quiet on the street. It almost sounds too good to be true, until you just try a set for yourself!

In addition to being golf course safe AND smooth on the street, Hybrid All Terrain golf cart tires also allow you to drive on the trails and dirt as well. This has made Hybrid ATs incredibly popular the last 3 years or so, and landed a couple on our list of Best Golf Cart Tires this year as well.

What Makes an All Terrain Tire a Hybrid-All Terrain Tire?

Hybrid Terrain vs. All Terrain Golf Cart Tires Comparison

The number one thing that separates Hybrid Terrain golf cart tires from traditional All Terrain tires is that you can drive Hybrid Terrain tires on the golf course! Yes, you read that correctly: Hybrid Terrain tires are All Terrain tires that are safe for the golf course and still ride smooth on the street! And that is why they are known as ‘hybrids’, because they can do it all. This unique tire style has a shallow all terrain tread depth of only 7mm, meaning they produce almost no road noise and cause minimum grass compaction (in other words, they're gentle). Now you can get steel belted radial all terrain performance everywhere you go, and still drive on the turf at any country club on earth.

Add to that, all Hybrid Terrain tires are DOT Tires (DOT approved), and are Radial as well (steel belted) for a winning combination on the streets, trail, and golf course that will last you 2x as long as regular Bias Ply tires and give your cart better running efficiency (due to less rolling resistance).

  • GTW Maverick Radial
  • TREX Artemis Bias-Ply

While street radials ride super smooth, the reason Hybrid All Terrain tires feel like they ride even smoother is because of their sidewall height (extra cushion) from having a larger overall size than most street tires. However, there are 23” street tires available as well that ride incredibly smooth, they just don’t offer as much traction on trails, sand or grass as Hybrids do.
