Even the best set of golf cart tires will ride poorly and wear quickly if you don't set your golf cart tire pressure correctly. Below, we outline how to set the tire pressure for different types of golf cart tires. And as the leading experts in golf cart wheels and tires for 11+ years, you can trust we've got you covered!
Golf Cart Tire Pressure Table
| Golf Cart Tire Type | Average Tire Pressure |
| Factory Sawtooth Tires (18x8.50-8) | 18-22 psi |
| Street/Turf Golf Cart Tires | 20-24 psi |
| All Terrain Golf Cart Tires | 18-20 psi |
| Full Turf Golf Cart Tires | 20 psi |
How to Set Tire Pressure on Golf Carts
Follow these three steps to set the correct tire pressure for golf cart tires:
- Check your tire sidewall: The recommended tire pressure can usually be found on the tire's sidewall. If not, check your golf cart's owner's manual (if you still have factory tires)
- Check pressure with gauge: Make sure to use a quality tire pressure gauge for accurate readings. We use the Milwaukee M12 Compact Inflator at our shop!
- Adjust tire pressure: Inflate or deflate your tires to the recommended PSI (Pounds Per Square Inch). Remember that tire pressure can be affected by temperature changes, so check and adjust the pressure regularly as needed. We recommend once every 4 weeks to be safe.
Pro tip: After adjusting the pressure, recheck it with your tire gauge a few hours later to make sure no small leaks are occuring.
Why Proper Golf Cart Tire Pressure Matters
Setting the correct tire pressure for your golf cart is important for safety (of course), but it's also important for your wallet and the way your golf cart rides / drives. Proper tire pressure settings help improve the lifespan of your tires by reducing unnecessary wear-and-tear. When you ride underinflated you cause a larger contact patch and put extra stress on the rubber itself. Correct tire pressure also gives you the best ride quality, handling, and battery (or fuel) efficiency for your cart.
Different terrains (such as gravel or sand) might require different tire pressures to provide the best performance. For example, many of our customers air down their tires on sand (beach use) to give their cart that larger contact patch we mentioned above, helping their cart to "float" over than sand rather than sinking in.
Tire Pressure for Different Types of Golf Cart Tires
The best tire pressure will vary based on the type of golf cart tires you are running. Here are some general guidelines:
- 18x8.5-8 Golf Cart Tires: The standard tire pressure for these factory sawtooth golf course sized tires is around 22 PSI, but it can vary depending on the specific tire model and load capacity and tire brand.
- Street / Turf Golf Cart Tires: These tires typically require higher pressure to ride smooth, usually between 20 and 24 PSI, for the best performance.
- All Terrain Golf Cart Tires: For these off-road golf cart tires with deeper tread depths, the recommended pressure is usually between 18 and 20 PSI. Rougher terrain requires lower pressure (more grip), and smooth terrain requires higher pressure.
- Turf Golf Cart Tires: Pure turf tires generally require similar pressure to factory sawtooth golf cart tires, usually around 20 PSI for the best ride quality on grass.
